TRAVEL
Porto
WHAT WE DID: Porto
Porto is famous for their port wines and proximity to the Douro Valley. To get to Porto, we took a 2.5 hour bus ride from Nazare.
Tour of the Douro Valley. We booked an all-day tour with Living Tours- highly recommend! Amazing value for all that’s included.
The day starts and ends with a 2 hour bus ride between Porto and the Douro Valley. But the views made it go by quickly!
We visited two wineries. At each, we were given a tour of the vines and taught about the process for making port, along with a tasting. In between wineries, a boat tour took us along the beautiful hills, full of vineyards on all sides. The second winery included an amazing, three-course (with wine) lunch.
Our guide was kind and excited to teach us about port, just as all of the winemakers were.
At the conclusion of the tour, we toasted with grappa (the liquor used to stop fermentation when making port).
Visit a wine cellar in Vila Nova de Gaia (just across the Dom Luís I Bridge). We chose to visit Calem and loved the tour and tasting!
Walk across the Dom Luís I Bridge and along the waterfront to admire the Douro river, well known for being the port wine avenue between the Douro Valley and Porto.
Explore the Crystal Palace Gardens - an amazing park with views of the water!
WHAT WE ATE: Porto
Shiko Tasca Japonesa - amazing sushi.
Petiscaria Fonsecas - nondescript shop with yummy sandwiches! The only place in Portugal we found without English speakers - but owners were very kind and understood our pointing at the menu!
Restaurante Conga Casa das Bifanas - a fun spot to try a bifana (a popular Portuguese sandwich).
Mind the Glass - adorable wine shop. Grab a spot on their patio - perfect for people watching!
Cafe do Cais -We had happy hour here - wine and cheese along the river!
WHERE WE STAYED: Porto
Close to everything with a spacious room! Would stay here again (and spring for the private bathroom again too).
